South of Glen Burnie

Severna Park is roughly bounded by Severn River to the south, I-97 to the west, East West Boulevard and Pasadena Road to the north and Anne Arundel Community College and Magothy River to the east. Glen Burnie borders the area to the north, Severn and Odenton to the west, Herald Harbor and Arden-On-The-Severn to the south, while Arnold and Lake Shore border the area to the east. Severna Park is 8 miles north of Annapolis and around 17 miles south of Baltimore.

Named by a Contest Winner

Severna Park was originally named “Boone”, and was a stop along the Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad, which converted to the B&A Rail Trail in 1990. The name Severna Park is believed to originate from a 1906 contest held by Oscar Hatton while the modern community was first becoming established. The winner apparently would receive a portion of land but controversy arose when the winner was an African-American woman, who instead was rewarded $500. Severna Park is also home to the Robinson House. This home was built in 1740 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

Major Roads & BWI

Route 2 is the main route running through Severna Park. This north-south route ends in nearby Arnold if you drive south. If you travel northbound you can pass Glen Burnie and drive into downtown Baltimore. Route 648 travels along a similar route to Route 2 and is a viable alternative to get to Glen Burnie and beyond. I-97 runs along the western end of town, separating the area from Severn Run Natural Environment Area. This interstate will take you a little further east of Baltimore while traveling south will land you near Annapolis. The Baltimore-Washington International Airport is also a short drive away.

Housing Stock

Because of the area’s location to Magothy River and Severn River, properties located along these rivers mostly consist of beach and lake-house style homes. The area’s location to waterfront is a major factor for homebuyers considering Severna Park as it offers piers, wonderful recreational opportunities, and terrific views. There are no specific styles when it comes to housing in Severna Park. Designs here come varied and are contemporary in style. Colonials, split-levels and new traditional are other common styles.

Glen Burnie for Entertainment, Severna Park for Dining Out

Severna Park provides plenty of shopping, entertainment, and dining destinations within its boundaries. Lochmanns Plaza, Severna Park Marketplace and Festival at Severna are all shopping centers located along Route 2. At any one of these destinations you can find either Kohl’s, JoS. A Bank, Giant, Dockers, Office Depot, Walgreens and many more stores. However, if you’re looking for more retail options, drive north on Route 2 and you’ll find Marley Station Mall. This fabulous enclosed shopping mall includes a plethora of restaurants and shopping stores including some of their anchor stores: J.C. Penney, Macy’s and Sears.

If you’re looking for delicious food, eat locally within Severna Park. Brian Boru Restaurant & Pub is located off of Route 2 and provides traditional Irish fare and Sunday brunch. The corned beef poppers and their amazing appetizers are a good enough reason to dine here, while their wood-and-stone accented pub and weekend live music also attracts plenty of customers. Severna Park Taphouse Bar & Grill is an unfussy tavern located on West Earleigh Heights Road. This Bar & Grill offers an abundance of widescreen TVs, an extensive beer menu, hearty bar fare and live music. If you’re love is beer, travel to Mother’s Peninsula Grille where they provide over 100 beers. Other restaurants worth mentioning include The Point Crab House & Grill, Cafe Mezzanotte, The Breakfast Shoppe and Gary’s Grill.

Recreational Activities

The Severn Run Natural Environment Area borders Severna Park to the west and provides some of the state’s most excellent trails. A little unknown 1,600-acre area, this park sits along Severn Run which flows in from Severn River and allows for some fantastic fishing opportunities. Trails for hiking, biking and horses are also common here while hunting is prohibited.

A more local attraction is the Kinder Farm Park. This farm turned County Park offers a look at past and present farming practices, including animal care. This 288-acre park features a 3-level playground and also allows kids to see animals that are owned by the 4H club, which include cows, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens and more. Kids can learn about animal care and watch a blacksmith at work and learn about different tools. There are also walking trails, picnic tables and pavilions for rent which allow private parties. Other green spaces within Severna Park are Chartwell Country Club, Elvation Park, and Lake Waterford Park. Severna Park middle and high school, Shipleys Choice elementary and Anne Arundel Community College all serve the area.

Severna Park is located near the Magothy and Severn Rivers. This allows for large amounts of water activities, fine choice in waterfront homes, and its location to several parks and the BWI Airport are other reasons why many are considering Severna Park.
