Severn is a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Known for its location to BWI Airport and towns like Glen Burnie and Hanover, this community is also within reach of some fabulous parks and Arundel Mills.

East of Fort Meade

Severn is bounded by the Patuxent Fairway to the south, Quarterfield Road to the east, Dorsey Road to the north and Route 713 and Route 175 to the west. Fort Meade and Jessup border the town to the west, Odenton to the south, Glen Burnie and eventually Pasadena to the east and Hanover to the north. Columbia, Elkridge, the Patapsco River and BWI are also nearby.

BWI

Baltimore-Washington International Airport sits directly north of the town and provides international air travel. It is the largest of the three airports serving the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area, the other two being Ronald Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport. There are bus services throughout the town, but no Metro station. Most residents however travel easily by car, with most destinations located in or near Severn. I-97 runs along the eastern end of town and if traveled north will take you into Baltimore. Route 100 is a major east-west route in the area. If driving west, you can go as far as Ellicott City while driving east will land you in Jacobsville, where the route terminates.

Real Estate in Severn

One of the best things about living in Severn is the diverse choices there are when it comes to housing. There are apartment buildings, condominiums, townhouses and detached single-family homes. Split foyers, colonials, contemporaries and ranchers are some popular styles you can find in Severn. Lately, new single-family home construction is transforming some of the old, 1930’s colonials to more stylish designs that also include some interesting craftsman designs.

Arundel Mills

Severn offers plenty of main stream and local markets and restaurants within their boundaries, but the town’s location to Glen Burnie and Hanover allows residents to experience a more diverse selection. Neighbor Glen Burnie’s closest provider is Quarterfield Crossing Shopping Center. Tucked within the northeastern point of Severn, this shopping mall consists of anchor stores like Walmart, Lowe’s, Kohl’s and Sam’s Club. If you travel the opposite direction on Route 100, you’ll run into Arundel Mills.

Arundel Mills is the largest mall in the state of Maryland and is the first enclosed mall to feature a Medieval Times dinner theater. This remarkable dinner theater includes jousting, horsemanship and falconry plus a 4-course, utensil-free meal served in a castle-like space. Maryland Live! Casino is also in Arundel Mills. This 24/7 destination features thousands of slot machines and electronic table games.  Another popular destination within the mall is the Cinemark Egyptian 24 Megaplex. This Egyptian-themed 24-screen megaplex theater is a popular destination for dates. Some restaurants located here include Dave & Buster’s, The Cheesecake Factory and Nando’s Peri-Peri. Department stores located in Arundel Mills are not limited to Ann Taylor, Burlington Coat Factory, H&M, J. Crew, The Lego Store, Bass Pro Shops, NY & Company and Nike Factory Store.

Recreational Opportunities

Severn-Danza Park is a wonderful park located on Donaldson Avenue. This leafy county park includes 10 baseball fields—5 lighted—3 lighted multi-purpose fields, 2 basketball courts, 2 tennis courts, a playground and plenty of trails for walking and biking. The Chesapeake BMX Super Track is also located within this park. Another interesting park is Friendship Park. Located across from BWI and on the other side of Dorsey Road, this fabulous park features playgrounds and access to the BWI trail. The trail goes through the woods, so there is plenty of shade during summer days. The best part about this park is its location to BWI. Planes fly directly overhead the park as they land or take off and so this is a wonderful place to take the young ones. Next to Friendship Park is Arundel Golf Park. This multi-faceted golf complex comes with a driving range, lessons, mini-golf and pro shop, plus some batting cages.

Near the community is Severn Run National Environment Area. Located along Severn Run, this remote park features hiking trails, fishing spots and plenty of other activities. The Patuxent Research Refuge is also nearby Severn, located south of Fort Meade. This 12,800-acre wildlife refuge allows Biologists to study many types of species and is the only National Wildlife Refuge in the United States established to support wildlife research. More green spaces located within Severn include Meade Village Park, Jessup-Provinces Park, Queenstown Park and Quail Run Dog Park.

Severn is a continuously growing community located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Many people have flocked here because of its location to BWI Airport and cities like Glen Burnie. Although the area lacks a Metro station, nearby Arundel Mills provides everything from clothing stores to a casino.
