Development of Crofton
In 1963, it was announced that the Crawford Corporation would build a new community called Crofton with the 1,600-acre of land it accumulated. Crofton would be anchored by a community golf course, which later became the Crofton Country Club. Crofton was officially founded in 1964. The company considered picking an English name for the new town and ended up picking the name “Crofton”, named after a small township in Cumberland County, England. The English town was originally called Croft-town, derived from the word “Croft”, as the town stood upon the Crofts.
Three Major Roads
The community offers little public transportation but its great location to major cities allows residents to travel around easily by car. The original community was built within a triangle formed by three major roads: Route 3, Route 424 and Route 450. The area now extends north and east from the triangle. Route 450 travelled east will take you to downtown Annapolis and travelling west will take you as far as Bladensburg. Route 3 taken north eventually connects to I-97 and leads you to Odenton. Route 424 will take you south to Davidsonville near Edgewater.
