Guide to Annapolis, MD

Annapolis Harbor in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Main Street in Annapolis, Maryland.

Annapolis is the capital of Maryland, as well as a county seat of Anne Arundel County. This historic city offers some 17th and 18th-century homes, terrific views, wonderfully historic buildings and establishments as well as being within close distance to some major roads.

Situated on the Chesapeake Bay

Annapolis, Maryland is situated on the Chesapeake Bay and is roughly belted by Quiet Waters Park and the Annapolis Golf Course to the south, Severn River to the east, Route 2 to the west, and Route 301 to the north. Hillsmere Shores, Edgewater, and Highland Beach border the city to the south, Parole and Crownsville to the north, and Crofton to the west. The city is also about 25 miles south of Baltimore and about 30 miles east of Washington, D.C.

Named After Princess Anne of Denmark & Norway

In 1694, after the overthrow of the Catholic government of Thomas Lawrence, Francis Nicholson moved the capital of the royal colony to Anne Arundel’s Towne and renamed the town Annapolis after Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, soon to be the Queen of Great Britain. Annapolis was incorporated as a city in 1708. During the 17th-century, Annapolis became more than a village and grew into a port of entry, a major center of the Atlantic slave trade. Water trades such as oyster-packing, boatbuilding, and sail making became the city’s chief industries. Currently, Annapolis is home to a large number of recreational boats that have largely replaced the seafood industry in the city.

Drive, but There is a Parking Problem

Driving around this city is quite easy. The area is a straight shot to Washington, D.C. via Route 50 and it’s also close to I-97 which leads to Baltimore. However, residents confirm that parking here is a hassle. Some of the new condominiums include underground parking, but many of the single-family homes lack driveways. The city is also served by a newly improved bus system, and four different lines go through the city leading to shopping centers and other establishments. Some other major routes in the city include Route 450, 435, 665, 2, 301 and 70.

Houses Here are in Demand

Because of the unique position of Annapolis, there is limited amount of buildable land and a high demand to live in the capitol of Maryland. The historic district is lined with 18th-century row houses and detached single-family homes. Outside the historic district, homes are newer but the prices still vary as you can find apartment complexes, multifamily homes, condominiums and townhomes at relatively affordable prices.

Restaurants & Entertainment Galore

Located on Bay Ridge Avenue in Eastport, Vin 909 is a cottage-restaurant offering a farm-to-table menu while using the freshest ingredients. This spot appeals to locals and visitors because of its fabulous refined American fare and its outstanding wine selection. Some favorite dishes include the Maryland Blue Crab Roll and the Rockstar pizza that features Hudson Valley foie gras, peaches, Fontina and Taleggio cheeses. Also in the Eastport is O’Learys Seafood Restaurant. This veteran hub serves upscale seafood in a charming old house adorned with colorful abstract art. The Lobster Cappuccino and the Mahi Mahi are delicious.

On Main Street, across the street from the Naval Academy, are some delicious restaurants. Joss Cafe & Sushi Bar is a wonderful Japanese restaurant offering fresh sushi and other Japanese fare. Osteria 177 is next door and is one of Annapolis’ premier dining spots. This Italian restaurant takes on Northern Italian cuisine while providing a deep wine list. Other fabulous restaurants around the city include Miss Shirley’s Cafe, The Melting Pot, Sin Fronteras Cafe, Galway Bay and Chart House.

Because of the proximity to the peninsula, you can also find many establishments offering lessons and rentals on different types of boats and kayaks. There are also plenty of marinas in and around the city.

Truxtun Park & the United States Naval Academy

With more than 40 parks and on more than 200 acres of park land, Annapolis is dedicated to the leisure interests of its residents. Of course, depending on where you decide to settle you might be closer to some than others. One beautiful park is Quiet Waters Park which dominates the southern end of the city. This amazing 340-acre park features 6 miles of paved trails, 6 miles of biking trails, boat rentals by paddle or pedal, a boat launch, a dog park, an area for fishing and plenty of playgrounds. The grounds also feature art galleries while being a hotspot for live music, weddings and other events.

Other terrific green spaces located around the city include the Annapolis Golf Course, Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, Homeport Farm Park, Rip Miller Field, and Forrest Sherman Field—with both fields surrounding the historic U.S. Naval Academy.

The United States Naval Academy was established in 1845 and is a four-year coeducational federal service academy focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education. The site is also home to the US Naval Academy Museum. This museum offers 2 floors of exhibits about naval history. Other important museums located around the city are the Banneker-Douglass Museum, The Chesapeake Children’s Museum, and the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

Annapolis, Maryland has a historic core unlike any other city in the United States. In addition, it also offers plenty of modern restaurants, great parks, wonderful historic sites and other recreational activities for the whole family.
